The NHS is the UK's largest employer — with over 1.4 million staff and thousands of vacancies at any one time. But NHS recruitment is different from the private sector. The application process is longer, more structured, and your CV needs to reflect NHS values as well as your skills and experience.
This guide covers exactly what NHS recruiters look for, what to include in an NHS CV, and how to use AI to write one that gets shortlisted.
📋 Important: Most NHS jobs use NHS Jobs (jobs.nhs.uk) where you fill in an online application form. However, a strong CV is still vital — many roles allow CV uploads, and having a polished CV helps you fill in application forms accurately and quickly.
NHS recruiters assess candidates against the NHS Constitution values and the Person Specification for each role. This means your CV needs to demonstrate:
This is the most important section. It should directly reference the role you're applying for, your key qualifications, and your alignment with NHS values. Don't write a generic personal statement — tailor it to each application.
If you're a registered clinician, put your registration details prominently — NMC Pin, GMC number, HCPC registration, GPhC number etc. Include expiry date.
List your key skills in bullet points. For clinical roles, include specific competencies. For non-clinical roles, include transferable skills relevant to the NHS environment.
For each role, include your achievements using the STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Quantify wherever possible — "Managed caseload of 35 patients" is stronger than "Managed patients".
Include all relevant qualifications with grades. For clinical roles, include your degree classification. Include mandatory training certifications.
List recent training courses, conferences, study days and self-directed learning. The NHS values staff who invest in their development.
